10 November 2024 | Holiday Inn Silom Bangkok, Thailand

On November 10, 2024, the Holiday Inn Silom in Bangkok served as the vibrant venue for the Professional Responsibilities and Legal Ethics in Business Law Practices Workshop, an impactful full-day training that brought together a diverse group of legal professionals, educators, and students from across the globe. Organized by BABSEACLE in its role as Secretariat, in collaboration with its international law firm partners—DLA Piper – New Perimeter, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), and White & Case—this event showcased the power of partnership in advancing legal education and professional ethics.

The workshop delivered three dynamic sessions, led by expert facilitators from the law firm partners:

1. ESG in Class Actions: Professional Responsibilities and Legal Ethics
Presented by Herbert Smith Freehills – New Perimeter, this session explored the ethical responsibilities and challenges in addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues through the lens of class actions.

2. Know Your Client (KYC), Compliance, and Sanctions: Professional Responsibilities and Legal Ethics
Led by White & Case, this segment delved into navigating KYC protocols, ensuring compliance, and understanding sanctions while upholding legal ethics.

3. Perspectives on Access to Justice for Corporate and Commercial Lawyers
Facilitated by DLA Piper, this session highlighted the intersection of access to justice and corporate law, emphasizing the ethical responsibilities of commercial legal practitioners.

The workshop was attended by a remarkable array of participants, representing a broad spectrum of professional roles and regions. Among them were law professors, legal practitioners, advocates, program directors, students, pro bono counsel, judicial members, and senior legal professionals. Their diverse backgrounds enriched the discussions, fostering a robust exchange of ideas and experiences.

Participants hailed from various roles, including:

  • Academia: Professors, associate deans, lecturers, and law students, contributing academic insights into legal ethics.
  • Legal Professionals: Attorneys, pro bono counsels, and compliance specialists, sharing their frontline experiences.
  • Corporate Sector Leaders: Heads of legal departments, bureau chiefs, and specialists in government and corporate roles, offering perspectives on corporate governance and access to justice.
  • Global Representatives: International attendees, including members and board members of the Mongolian Bar Association, added a unique international perspective.

This diversity underscored the workshop’s commitment to inclusivity and global outreach, uniting voices from different legal, corporate, and academic spheres.

Huge thanks to the participants for their active engagement and to our law firm partners—DLA Piper – New Perimeter, Herbert Smith Freehills, and White & Case—for their invaluable contributions and unwavering support. Together, we created a space for impactful learning and dialogue, demonstrating the power of collaboration in shaping a more ethical and just legal profession.
